Queen & David Bowie ‘Under Pressure’
Everyone’s welcome to channel their inner Freddie Mercury and David Bowie and sing a fabulous arrangement of the famous duet Under Pressure – taught by Yula, with Francis Goodhand on keys.
Under Pressure was born from an informal jam session, built around John Deacon’s iconic bassline, when David Bowie happened to be in Montreux while Queen were recording their album Hot Space in 1981. David reputedly encouraged the Queen frontman to improvise his vocal part… he secretly listened in and then used Freddie’s recording as the inspiration for his own contributions, to create the now famous “duelling” between the two.
Don’t panic, we won’t be asking you to make up your own harmonies: Yula will send vocal parts out for you to listen to in advance, and then take you through learning the whole song in a single uplifting session, with words on screen, making it easy for everyone to join in – no prior experience needed, just enthusiasm. “Doo-doo-boom-ba-beh-beh!”, as Freddie would say!
We’re delighted to have Francis join us for this event. An exceptional pianist, composer, MD, and musical arranger behind many big shows up and down the country, and who some of you may have seen at our recent Pitch Perfect singalong with Deke Sharon.
This marks our third event at The Church right in the heart of Ipswich, a stunning venue which delivers something special every time. The Buttermarket multi-storey car park is an short (well-lit) distance from The Church. In response to feedback from previous participants, we’ve nudged timings slightly so that you can benefit from cheap Buttermarket parking, which is just £2 for arrival after 7pm.

Tickets available to Pop Chorus members, friends & family, and the wider public: £15 Adults, £8 Under 16s (each including £1 per ticket booking fee), with Essential Companions free. Doors 6:30pm, singing 7.30-9.15pm approx (including a break), bar open until 10pm. The venue is disabled-friendly, but please let us know of any special requirements. This is a predominantly standing venue, but some seats will be available – please be generous about prioritising these for people who need them most.
